Burning Responsibly: Choosing the Right Fuel for Your Stove

Burning Responsibly: Choosing the Right Fuel for Your Stove

Every stove user has a responsibility to burn correctly. Throwing anything into your wood burner isn’t just inefficient — it’s unsafe and harmful to the environment. By understanding how poor fuel impacts your stove, the heat it gives out and the impact to your pocket you can make better choices and enjoy a cleaner, safer, and more efficient burn.

Why the Right Fuel Matters

I know you will be thinking, "well you guys sell kiln dried firewood, so you would say this wouldn't you". However it's sort of the other way around, we couldn't find local wood that was dry enough, created enough heat, produced little smoke and was available all the way through the Autumn, Winter and Spring as we knew how important good firewood was for our homes. So we set out creating a company that could do just that, whilst promoting UK forestry and creating UK jobs.

The importance of having excellent firewood cannot be understated. The internet is full of people selling cheap, wet wood. Drying wood takes time and costs money, not all log reseller are equal. We aware of what you are buying and ask questions of your proposed supplier.

Burning poor-quality or wet wood leads to:

  • Increased smoke and emissions
  • Higher risk of chimney fires
  • Lower heat output and efficiency
  • Greater risk of carbon monoxide poisoning

Choosing the right fuel means protecting your home, your health, and the environment. Logs are a wonderful way to heat your home, but only if done safely.

Ready to Burn Certification

Always look for the Ready to Burn mark.

  • It guarantees wood has a moisture content of 20% or less.
  • Dry wood burns hotter, cleaner, and produces far fewer pollutants.
  • Using a moisture meter helps ensure your logs remain dry during storage.

Burning wet wood creates more smoke, harmful particulates, and soot build-up, which can damage your chimney and stove, as well as negatively impacting the health of you and your neighbours who won't thank you for burning wet wood.

Woodsure Certified Logs

Woodsure is the UK’s leading certification body for woodfuel. Choosing Woodsure-certified fuel ensures:

  • Logs are cut to suitable size and diameter
  • Moisture content is tested and controlled
  • Wood is responsibly sourced and legally compliant

This gives you peace of mind that your firewood is clean, safe, and sustainable.
